"The Indians were very unsatisfactory from the start. Sergeant Major Chanchail Singh had no control over the men.

"At 20.00 hours on December 21st P. C.

D168 was arrested in a brothel in Western District hiding under a bed. He was in possession of a revolver concealed under his jacket. Suspected of taking part in a robbery. He was tried by Mr. Searle, Assistant Super- intendent of Police, and sentenced to six days solitary confinement in the cells at Upper Levels."

"On 9th December this officer was sent to Bay View as my assistant. Unfor- tunately, he appeared to be suffering from a bad attack of nerves and was of little or no help to me. He told me he had previously been in the hands of the Japanese and was nervous in case this should happen again. lowever, in the end, on or about the 12th December, I had to ask the Divisional Inspector Last to take him away. 11
